Eastern Europe, Caucasus & Central Asia
Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova and Ukraine are partner countries in the region Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. Expanding over a distance of over 4000 km, the region reaches from the EU’s borders to Central Asia. As the region is a hub for trade and transit between Europe, Central and South Asia, the Middle East and China, it plays a key role in reducing the risk of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
Over the last years, the number of partner countries within the region increased significantly. The Ukraine became the first partner country in this region, joining the programme under PP05. By the start of LTP 2008 Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Uzbekistan became partner countries and last by the start of LTP 2011 Afghanistan and Kazakhstan. Of the eight countries five are ad-hoc countries, leaving Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine as full-scope countries.
