Uzbekistan
The relationship between the EU and Central Asia is framed by the agreement “EU and Central Asia: Strategy for a New Partnership” adopted in June 2007 and which focuses on strengthening cooperation between the two regions. Uzbekistan is a beneficiary in several cooperation programmes between the EU and Central Asia, including the Central Asia Indicative Programme 2007-2010 and the Development Cooperation Instrument (DCI).
As relates specifically to Uzbekistan, the foundation for its relations with the EU relation is encompassed within the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA), which was signed in 1996 and entered into force in 1999.
Uzbekistan is party to all relevant non-proliferation treaties and has committed itself to fighting the proliferation of WMD . It has also officially requested international expert assistance from the UNSCR 1540 Committee “…to train its national personnel in accordance with international standards (customs agencies, border troops, national guard, and monitoring and control bodies)”.
