The EU’s bilateral and regional relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries were established with the signing of the Cooperation Agreement in 1988 as well as with the foundation of the regional organisation “Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf” in May 1981, which includes the countries Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Furthermore, this agreement contains a commitment from both sides to enter into negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement, which have taken place at an accelerated rate since 2007.
