South East Europe
Cooperation in the realm of export control of dual-use goods with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro already started under the Pilot Project 2004 (PP04) – implemented by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Cooperation with these countries continued under BAFA-implemented follow-up projects PP05 and PP06. Albania and FYRoMacedonia joint the programme under PP06. Countries from South East Europe were the first addressees of the project; reflecting the strategic importance of the region through its immediate closeness to the European Union. With Croatia, FYRoMacedonia and Montenegro being EU candidate countries and others aspired to meet the EU acquis, partner countries in South East Europe are particularly interested in modelling their national legislation after the EU regulations and procedures.
This long-lasting cooperation makes South East Europe the most active region within the project. Activities have been conducted in all five cooperation areas: legal, licensing, customs, awareness and sanctions. Throughout the region – with the countries facing similar challenges and sharing common experiences – an additional focus lies in conducting regional activities utilizing regional synergies.
