FYROMacedonia
The relevance of FYR of Macedonia as a partner country derives from its geographical location in South Eastern Europe, making it a neighbour of the EU, and its aspirations to join the EU. FYR of Macedonia was granted candidate country status for EU membership in 2005, thereby strengthening the political ties between the EU. The Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with FYR of Macedonia was signed on 9 April 2001 and entered into force on 1 April 2004, while the Interim Agreement, covering trade and trade-related aspects, entered into force in June 2001. In general, FYR of Macedonia’s relationship with the EU has been characterised by a long and intensive exchange and good cooperation.
FYR of Macedonia has submitted three reports to the 1540 Committee (in 2004, 2006 and 2008) but has not requested specific assistance for implementing UNSCR 1540. The country has, however, committed itself to the promotion of the resolution and to reviewing and assessing its national capacity, legislation and practices to establish effective measures to prevent the proliferation of WMD. Furthermore, the country’s bid for membership to the EU shows its willingness to work cooperatively with and receive assistance from the EU, as do the ongoing negotiations regarding the acceptance of the WMD clause.
